If you are heading to the Chillagoe Guesthouse from Cairns take the Kuranda Range road to Mareeba then via the “Wheelbarrow Way” to Dimbulah, Petford and then on to Chillagoe. It is about 1 hour and 40 min from Mareeba, the last 30km is unsealed.

chillagoe photos1 On arrival in town you will see the ruins of the old smelter, visitors are encouraged to take a self guided tour of the smelter and discover fascinating information on how the pioneers once lived. Chillagoe has many historic sites around town, you will be amazed at how much history has been preserved. Limestone Cave tours are a must do while in Chillagoe; you can join in a guided tour of the 3 caves which operate daily. The area is also rich in small rock art galleries of aboriginal paintings.

The local swimming hole is well used by both the residents and visitors all year round, a shady picnic table is provided and it is a great spot to relax after a day of sight seeing. You can also grab your fishing rod, a picnic lunch and your swimming gear and head out of town on an adventure to Walsh River. The region is world renowned for its birdwatching, plus there are many walking tracks to enjoy; remember to take your camera along for some great photos of the local wildlife and landscape.
