Of the 145,000 disadvantaged school children in NSW, they are only able to bring 1 in 58 to experience Sydney Opera House’s critically acclaimed education program. Their goal is to reach at least 1 in 10.
You can also be a Jeans for Genes Day Genie. Genies help out on Jeans for Genes Day in your workplace, factories, schools and out on the streets. They help to promote the event, collect donations and take care of anything else that makes the day fun. They also raise money by selling Jeans for Genes Day products.

The money raised from Jeans for Genes Day goes towards the work of these scientists. One in twenty children are born with some form of genetic fault. There are children with leukaemia, muscular dystrophy, genetic defects and many other disorders. The scientists at the Children’s Medical Research Institute are working to try to prevent these diseases before they occur in our children, or where that is not possible to develop better treatments. To find out how you can be involved with Jeans for Genes Day visit their website.

Together for a mere 10 years, The Beatles led a musical revolution and radically transformed the sound and significance of rock & roll. They set fire to cultural conceptions and gave voice to a generation who adopted everything from their haircuts, clothing and even social outlook. Their sound was fresh and rich with a harmonic structure that remains unequalled in both popularity and influence.

Schools are one of the most common places to pick up and spread germs. In the last year, more than 1.9 million Australian children between the ages of 5-14 years were absent from school due to cold and flu* so it’s important they understand that they can help stay healthy through washing their hands both at home and at school. This winter, the Dettol Healthy Touch Program is visiting primary schools, sports clubs and community groups around Australia to help teach our little ones good hand hygiene.

A giant inflatable dome shaped ‘Germnasium’ classroom will visit school and sporting grounds to teach young kids everything there is to know about germs – the good, the bad and the ugly! In 2010,
10 schools, sporting clubs and community groups across NSW, QLD and VIC are participating in the Dettol Healthy Touch Program.

Once inside the Dettol ‘Germnasium’ kids will be taught by accredited primary school teachers and will participate in a range of fun and interactive lessons that integrate with the current PDHPE and Science & Technology syllabus to help establish good hygiene habits from an early age. Kids will learn what a germ is (good and bad, as we know not all germs are bad!), four of the most common germs and their effects, as well as how to help stop the spread of germs.

Sarah Pawley, Accredited Primary School Teacher of The Healthy Touch Program says, “83% of Aussie parents believe schools are one of the main areas where their children can pick up and spread germs, however, it’s a known fact that kids find germs boring. They don’t think about the spread of germs as they can’t see or feel them.”

The Dettol Healthy Touch Program is a fun, interactive way of teaching kids good hand hygiene habits that they can use throughout the day – from classroom to sporting ground and when they go home.

The program has giant germ characters, hand washing jingles, a germ-ometer and luminescent paint showing the everyday germs that can accumulate on children’s hands. These are just some of the activities that Aussie kids will take part in once inside Dettol’s ‘Germnasium’.

Dettol’s Top Handwashing Tips:

Always wash your hands after sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose, before eating, after going to the bathroom, after playing with pets and playing sport.

Wash your hands for approximately 20 seconds using an antibacterial hand wash such as Dettol.

Most commonly missed areas are finger nails, around your fingers and back of the hand.

</>
The Dettol Healthy Touch Program are currently taking registrations for next year via their website. If you would like to register or find out more visit them at www.healthyfamilies.com.au

The vast green front lawns of Federal Parliament was the focus for the release of a new kids climate change book on Monday 26 July. Wilbur Worm, an environmental educator, took up residence on the front lawns at Parliament House Canberra to promote 20 fun projects children can undertake in their own backyard.

The new book is the first in The Little Green Books series to be published online, the brainchild of Melbourne publicist Ron Smith. Ron Smith has combined with leading Australian environmental educator Bob Winters to create CLIMATE CHANGE IN MY BACKYARD 20 fun projects for kids to make a difference. Ron Smith said the environment for future generations is a major challenge for all political parties worldwide as they try to balance the needs of progress, the limiting of pollution and to maintain a sustainable lifestyle.

We are using the digital highway, the most environmental way to provide our book to as many parents and children, teachers and politicians as possible. “This Little Green Book CLIMATE CHANGE IN MY BACKYARD is aimed at getting parents involved in projects with their children and developing life skills and attitudes which will help them protect the environment and ensure a healthy planet for their own children”.

As Australia’s capital cities see the disappearance of the traditional Australian backyard, we build on smaller allotments and there is a lack of space for children, it is more important than ever as a society we encourage our children to develop environmental life skills. “The 20 Fun projects are simple and easy to do ranging from give a frog a pond to checking out leaky taps.” It is being distributed FREE from thelittlegreenbooks.com website and is being provided to schools, councils, environment groups, parents and children worldwide.
